I WASN'T supposed to make it this far…
I didn’t start out with a clear path. The odds were stacked against me. I was kicked out of high school in my senior year, working as a security guard for $5.25 an hour, and raising three kids by the time I was 22. I didn’t have a degree. I didn’t have a plan. What I did have was a decision to lead myself forward one step at a time.
That decision opened the door to an opportunity in technology at Dean Witter in the World Trade Center. It was supposed to be a 30-day temp job. I worked like my family’s future depended on it because it did. That short assignment turned into a career. On 9/11, I was in the Trade Center when the planes hit.
That moment shook my faith, but it also deepened it.
I learned that fear doesn’t get the last word. Faith does.
how my path became clear
Over the years, I kept climbing the ladder in my career, eventually reaching a C-level role while also pastoring and leading in ministry. On paper, I had made it. But something still felt off.
I realized I wasn’t just chasing success. I was searching for fulfillment. And what I discovered was this. Every season of my life, from broken beginnings to boardrooms, required the same thing. Leadership.
Not just the kind you use in a job description. But the kind that starts with self-leadership. Learning to align my spiritual, emotional, relational, and professional life so they weren’t competing against each other. I didn’t want to succeed at work but fail at home. I didn’t want to grow spiritually but collapse emotionally. I didn’t want to lead others if I couldn’t lead myself.
That’s when it became clear. Fulfillment doesn’t come from choosing one lane at the expense of another. It comes from alignment. Living whole, leading well, and building something that multiplies beyond you.
Today, that’s what I help people do.
